On September 7, 1774, only two days after it’s beginning, marked an historic opening for the members of this country’s first Continental Congress. With members, including George Washington, John Adams, Patrick Henry, and Samuel Adams, the committee requested that the session be opened by paying reverence to God. Reverend Jacob Duche, of the Christ Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, lead the committee in reading Psalm 35 then, led the first prayer to be given in Congress.
